The tradition of exchanging gemstones for wedding anniversaries is said to have started in medieval Germany where a husband would bestow upon his wife a silver garland on their 25th wedding anniversary and a gold one on their 50th. The custom of gifting gemstones to mark birthdays seems to have begun in Poland during the 18th century.
